The purpose of our Animal Care Manager is to oversee the daily operations of the kennel and cattery, staff to ensure all animals in the shelter's care receive the expected quality of care our organization is known for. This individual is responsible for training all new animal care staff on HSHC cleaning protocols. This position will report to the Director of Operations and works alongside the Medical Manager, Behavior Manager, Foster Program Manager, Volunteer Manager, and Customer Service Manager to contribute to the overall efficiency of the organization and achieve our mission.
The Animal Care Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of our animal care program including, but not limited to:
-- Perform kennel & cattery duties as necessary. -- Communicate effectively and on a daily/weekly basis with Director of Operations and all other Operations Managers about any concerns regarding animals in HSHC care.-- Effectively coordinate scheduling conflicts for request off forms, terminations, and new hires. -- Effectively work with each new hire to complete the training program for each position within the Animal Care Department in conjunction with the Director of Operations and the Human Resources Manager. -- Supervise a staff of approximately 12 employees including training, scheduling, delegation of tasks, evaluations of performance, and problem solving in a timely manner. -- Manage and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Animal Care Department, through improvements to each function as well as coordination and communication between other departments. -- Plan effectively to ensure that the staff has the necessary supplies on hand when needed while understanding the need to stick to a strict budget. -- Process and manage inventory weekly. -- Improve processes and policies in support of organizational goals. Formulate and implement departmental and organizational policies and procedures to maximize output. Monitor adherence to rules, regulations and procedures.-- Coordinate and monitor the work of various departments involved in providing care for our animals. Monitor performance and suggest improvements.-- Ensure quality of care while managing employee productivity. -- Manage maintenance of animal care equipment and shelter grounds. -- Provide technical support where necessary.-- Assist in the development of strategic plans for operational activity. Implement and manage operational plans.-- Promote animals and have strategic placement of harder to adopt animals.-- Ensure the Pet Point system is up to date on a weekly basis regarding Animal Locations. -- Keep an on going relationship with the local Petsmart store and place adoptable cats at the store in a timely manner. -- Be on a rotating on call schedule to address medical concerns that may arise during after hours operations.-- Must evaluate the mental and physical well-being of animals, while ensuring to make decisions on proper medical treatment. -- Counseling potential adopters and fosters on conditions of animals. -- Successfully vaccinate and draw blood from animals for medical test. -- Have knowledge and experience with common medical conditions, treatment of conditions, such as but not limited to: respiratory infections, heartworm, ringworm, demodex, sarcoptic mange, and skin infections. -- Knowledge of how and when to quarantine animals for contagious diseases.
Qualifications: -- Embrace our no-kill philosophy.-- Be a self-starter with a lot of initiative, problem solving skills & the ability to work with minimal supervision.-- Be an excellent communicator-both written and verbal.-- Be a natural people-person & "cheerleader" who positively motivates others & has a knack for diplomacy.-- Experience using shelter related software like PetPoint is a required. -- Be flexible to work some nights and weekends.-- Have reliable transportation.-- Be able to excel in a high paced work environment where you are surrounded by the distractions of animal sounds, smells and their respective allergens.-- Experience in behavior modification and training programs (Meet your Match, SAFER Testing, etc.) preferred.-- Be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs without health risk.
